Project ASL is a Mixed Reality application in development at XR Labs that teaches American Sign Language in a completely interactive way.

While traditional ASL learning software relies solely upon picture and video to demonstrate signing, Project ASL works with the Leap Motion Controller to take it one step further and add a level of interactivity that wasn’t possible before.

Using sign language recognition software to track user’s hands as they sign, this program offers instantaneous feedback so students can correct mistakes and build confidence as they go.

The first component of this project, which is currently in development, is focused on vocabulary building. Using flashcards, the program teaches users how to sign the alphabet and several baseline words that serve as the foundation for conversation in ASL.
