Creating Interactive Trade Show Experiences for Digikey

DigiKey, one of the largest electronic component distributors in the world, attends multiple trade shows every year. But with hundreds of brands competing for limited attention, breaking through the noise can be a challenge. Wanting to create engaging experiences to capture the attention of attendees in an exciting new way, Digikey reached out to Subvrsive.

The Idea:

Help Digikey cut through the clutter and make a splash at trade shows and events with interactive augmented reality experiences.

The Work:

We created AR activations for two trade shows to capture the attention of attendees: a “Build Your Own LED Skateboard” experience and a tabletop model of a “City of the Future”.

The Result:

Two booth experiences that captured the attention of consumers and technical editors alike, one of which earned the brand an Editor’s Choice award at World Maker Faire NY.

World Maker Faire

The first show we tackled was World Maker Faire NY. The goal was to create familiarity with Maker.io, a Digikey website dedicated to helping makers bring their ideas from concept to creation. So, we simulated an entire Maker.io project in augmented reality.

Building a LED Skateboard

The Maker.io AR experience allowed users to virtually build an LED skateboard right on an iPad at the Digikey booth. Users followed a series of steps to order and unbox parts, assemble the board, and connect all the wires in AR. Once done, they could scan a physical skateboard in the Digikey booth to active its LED lights and bring the project to life.

The technical editors at the show were so impressed with the activation that they gave it an Editor’s Choice Award.

Embedded World 2019

On the tails of the successful skateboard experience, DigiKey wanted to create another AR activation, this time for Embedded World 2019. For this show, the goal was to teach trade show attendees about how DigiKey components can be used to help make cities smarter. So, our team built a City of the Future in AR.

Touring a City of the Future

At the show, booth visitors scanned a DigiKey-branded coffee table with an iPad to ignite an augmented reality tabletop version of a City of the Future. They could explore various hotspots within the city to learn about how DigiKey components can be used in different environments to improve various aspects of cities – from agriculture to healthcare to suburban development.

The interactive nature of the experience sparked the curiosity of trade show attendees and drove loads of engagement with Digikey at the show.

“Trade shows are all about creating memorable brand moments that cut through the clutter. And that’s what augmented reality does best. It lets consumers truly interact with a brand, creating a hands-on experience they won’t soon forget.”
