Creating trade show
buzz for Viasat with
a Hololens Experience.
Project Overview
A Mixed Reality Experience
Viasat is a global communications company and provider of in-flight satellite internet solutions that keep travelers connected from takeoff to touchdown. Wanting to show attendees of the 2018 NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition just how powerful Viasat in-flight wifi is, the brand engaged Subvrsive to reimagine the future of in-flight entertainment and communications as a mixed reality experience unprecedented in the aerospace industry.
Work
Telling the Viasat Story In a Brand New Way
The story we were tasked with telling was that Viasat’s in-flight internet can fully support the connectivity needs of tomorrow’s business travelers, today. So, we painted a picture of one such traveler: a private jet commuter streaming news and entertainment, monitoring stocks, video conferencing, and checking email – all in augmented reality at 40,000 feet.
Work
Shooting on a Jet Plane
The first step was to shoot the Connected Traveler video from the cabin of a GulfStream G650. The plane reserved for the shoot was only available for one day while it was being serviced in-between flights. But, facing an aggressive timeline, our team was able to stage, light, and shoot the entire video within twelve hours to create a flawless finished piece in time for the show.
Work
A Custom
Application
The second step was to bring the Hololens app featured in the video to life so that NBAA attendees could try it out for themselves. So, we created a custom app that let booth visitors use simple hand gestures to open and manipulate floating boxes of content – from Netflix streams, to email inboxes, to video conferences – showing just how much in-flight bandwidth Viasat provides. Prior to the show, we preloaded a Hololens headset with the experience, recorded a step-by-step instructional video, and shipped it all to the Viasat team to test out in rehearsal.
Opportunity
AR for Trade Shows
The Viasat video and Hololens experience were a massive hit at the NBAA show. Users who tried the Hololens application were amazed by the magic of AR, and the activation did such a good job of creating engagement with the booth that Viasat employees could barely step away. Augmented Reality activations like this are a great way to cut through trade show clutter and create branded experiences that customers won’t soon forget.
