Streaming a SXSW Event Live in 360 Degrees

Every year, Austin’s SXSW festival brings together the best and the brightest minds from the worlds of music, film, and technology, and for nearly two weeks every March, Texas’s weirdest city is transformed into a sea of concerts, panels, film screenings, and technology displays. 2017 was no different.

One of the most exciting events to take place during the first weekend of the festival was hosted by Lionsgate at the Cedar Street Courtyard in the heart of Downtown Austin. On Sunday night, the popular courtyard was transformed into Seb’s – the beloved jazz club from La La Land. For a few hours that evening, SXSWers were able to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the festival to enjoy La La Land-inspired cocktails, live jazz music, and a conversation with Oscar-winning composer Justin Hurwitz.

Wanting to share the very special evening with fans of the film who were unable to attend the event, Lionsgate asked our team to live-stream the entire evening in 360 degrees.

The Idea:

Bring the SXSW La La Land experience to life online so fans of the film who were unable to attend the Austin-based event could enjoy it live from the comfort of their homes.

The Work:

We live-streamed the entire evening in immersive 360 degrees so fans could tune in live on Facebook and enjoy the music and conversation with Justin Hurwitz.

The Result:

The 360 live stream garnered over 313K views and 23.6K reactions, comments, and shares on Facebook, leading to over 1.7M in organic reach.

See it for Yourself

The live stream is still available on the La La Land Facebook page. You can watch the entire thing below and click and drag to change your view.

Optimizing the Experience

In order to create the best experience possible for those tuning in online, we set up our camera next to the piano on stage. This gave users a great view of Justin and the band as well as the audience and the entire venue. We also worked hand-in-hand with the event’s audio and lighting crews to optimize the sights and sounds for the 360 stream.

Over 1.7 Million Reached

Both the event itself and the live stream were hugely successful. The 360 live stream garnered over 313K views and 23.6K reactions, comments, and shares. Not only did fans of the movie tune in, they engaged with the content and shared it with their friends, leading to over 1.7M in organic reach.
