Boxing in VR
Our team at Subvrsive has had the pleasure of working with SHOWTIME Sports on several occasions to fuel excitement around boxing using the power of 360 Video. From capturing exhilarating primetime boxing matchups in fully immersive 360 degrees to producing pre-fight promotional content, we have leveraged 360 Video to drive results for the network in numerous ways.
Work
An Emmy-Nominated Experience
The first project we worked on with SHOWTIME Sports was a groundbreaking VR event. Using a variety of purpose-built 360 camera arrays, we assisted SHOWTIME in the content capture and production of the first-ever boxing match to be released in its entirety in Virtual Reality. The grueling matchup between WBA Middleweight World Champion Daniel Jacobs’ and previously undefeated challenger Peter Quillin ended in a brutal first-round TKO, which we captured in thrilling 360 degrees. The experience, which was later released on YouTube, Facebook, Milk VR, and Littlstar, went on to be nominated for a Sports Emmy in the Outstanding Digital Innovation category.
Work
A Behind-the-Scenes
Ticket to Training Camp
After working with SHOWTIME Sports to capture primetime fights in VR, the network had us back to capture more 360° boxing excitement. This time, though, rather than capturing the matchups themselves, we built anticipation for an upcoming Welterweight World Title Showdown by filming “Showtime” Shawn Porter and Keith “One Time” Thurman as they gave it their all at training camp. We sent teams to both of their training facilities in Las Vegas and Florida to capture the boxers as they prepared for the big night.
Idea
A 360 Preview Leading
Up to the Big Fight
Similar to the training camp videos, we also fueled fan excitement for an upcoming matchup by creating a 360 teaser of the highly anticipated showdown between Keith “One Time” Thurman and Danny “Swift” Garcia. The immersive teaser used a combination of thrilling 360 training footage, brutal clips from previous knockout fights, and slick motion graphics to set the stage for the night’s epic clash.
Opportunity
360 Video for Audience Engagement
360 Video is a highly effective tool that can be used alongside traditional 2D content to deepen fan engagement and drive brand results. The VR boxing experiences we created with SHOWTIME together received millions of views, an Emmy nomination, and some very enthusiastic feedback from Showtime’s fans and followers. As one viewer succinctly put it, “360 VR IS DOPE!!!”. We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
